Lines and spaces

  • The football pitch or the playing field
  • Description: The rectangle on which a football match takes place. It is between 100 and 110 metres long and 64 to 75 metres wide.
  • Function: Boundary of the area on which the game is played. Contains all lines and markings that regulate the game.
  • The goal line
  • Description: The two shorter lines at the ends of the pitch, between the goalposts.
  • Function: Serves as the boundary for the pitch. A goal is scored when the ball crosses the goal line completely between the goalposts and under the crossbar.
  • The centre line
  • Description: The line that divides the pitch into two halves.
  • Function: Divides the pitch into two equal halves. It is used before kick-off and after a goal to restart the game.
  • The sideline
  • Description: The two longer lines on the sides of the pitch.
  • Function: Mark the side boundaries of the pitch. If the ball crosses the touch line completely, play is restarted with a throw-in.
  • The centre
  • Description: A point in the centre of the centre line.
  • Function: The place from which the match or the second half and, after each goal, the match is restarted by a kick-off.
  • The penalty spot
  • Description: A point in the penalty area, 11 metres from the goal line.
  • Function: A penalty kick is taken from this point.
  • The cornerstone
  • Description: The four points at the corners of the pitch.
  • Function: Corner kicks are executed from these points.
  • The gate
  • Description: A construction consisting of two posts, a crossbar and a net.
  • Function: The area that the playing team defends and into which the attacking team tries to kick the ball in order to score a goal.
  • The goal area or five-metre area
  • Description: A rectangular area in front of the goal, 5.5 metres from the goal line.
  • Function: Protects the goalkeeper. Within this area, the goalkeeper has special rights and can play the ball with his hands.
  • The penalty area or sixteen-metre area
  • Description: A rectangular area in front of the goal, 16.5 metres from the goal line.
  • Function: Marks the area in which fouls by the defending team lead to a penalty kick and the area in which the goalkeeper is allowed to play the ball with his hands.
  • The kick-off circle
  • Description: A circle with a radius of 9.15 metres around the centre.
  • Function: Ensures that opposing players maintain a minimum distance from the ball at the kick-off.
