At a glance

The Pick-up artist

Comedy short film from the year 2006, length 13 min

Writer/Director: Steffen Weinert

Actor: Steffen Groth, Chantal Hourticolon, Nina Weniger

Camera: Ulle Hadding

Production design: Stefanie Kromrei

Cut: Ramin Sabeti

B2 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The difficulty of the film lies, among other things, in the childlike articulation of the actress Chantal Hourticolon and in some unspoken cultural implications, such as the entries made by the "ripper" in his diary. For some learner groups, the assessments of the "ripped open women" made there may not be easy to understand in terms of content, even if they are linguistically comprehensible.

45 to 60 minutes; a double lesson can therefore be planned for both parts.

In detail

Worksheet for DaF B2/C1 on the film The Pick-up artist

The basis of the worksheet for DaF B2/C1 is the award-winning short film The Pick-up artist by Steffen Weinert.

In the first part of the film, a so-called pick-up artist tries to sneak out of his conquest's bedroom. There he unexpectedly encounters her young daughter, who engages him in conversation with her childish questions. As a result, he is unable to disappear immediately, as he had intended.

As the film offers too much for a single worksheet at 13 minutes, it has been split into two parts. The first worksheet deals with the pick-up's first conversation with the girl until he escapes to his car. There he realises that he has forgotten the car keys.

Before seeing

Before watching the film, you should complete task 1, which prepares you for the topic of the film. The small glossary Words and phrases includes key terms from the film that are important for understanding the plot. It should be read aloud with the course participants in preparation. Aloud because the learners are then confronted with these terms in acoustic form. The sound image is therefore more important than the written image.

During the viewing

Task 2 should be completed during the viewing.
Task 3 can be used to prepare for the second part of the film. The learners should work in pairs to think about the progression of the story and record this as a text and/or picture. A combination of both would be nice, so that perhaps even a kind of Storyboard or Comic or even a Graphic Novel is created.
The video can be accessed via the director's homepage and YouTube. It can be shown online during lessons. Alternatively, the course participants can access the video on their smartphones and work on the worksheet, e.g. in pairs or groups.

Teach online

The worksheet is also suitable for online lessons. Share the worksheet with all participants and then send your participants in pairs or small groups to a separate room (e.g. at Zoom: breakout room), where you can watch the video together and work on the worksheet.
