At a glance

The Pick-up artist

Comedy short film from the year 2006, length 13 min

Writer/Director: Steffen Weinert

Actor: Steffen Groth, Chantal Hourticolon, Nina Weniger

Camera: Ulle Hadding

Production design: Stefanie Kromrei

Cut: Ramin Sabeti

B2 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The difficulty of the film lies, among other things, in the childlike articulation of the actress Chantal Hourticolon and in some unspoken cultural implications, such as the entries made by the "ripper" in his diary. For some learner groups, the assessments of the "ripped open women" made there may not be easy to understand in terms of content, even if they are linguistically comprehensible.

45 to 60 minutes; a double lesson can therefore be planned for both parts.

In detail

Worksheet for DaF B2/C1 on the film The Pick-up artist

The worksheet is based on the award-winning short film The Pick-up artist by Steffen Weinert.

In the first part of the film, a so-called pick-up artist tries to sneak out of his conquest's bedroom. There he unexpectedly encounters her young daughter, who engages him in conversation with her childish questions. As a result, he is unable to disappear immediately, as he had intended.

As the film offers too much for a single worksheet at 13 minutes, it has been split into two parts. The first worksheet deals with the pick-up's first conversation with the girl until he escapes to his car. There he realises that he has forgotten the car keys. The second worksheet deals with the return to the flat until the end of the film.

Before the sightn

Before watching the film, task 1 should be completed, which takes up the end of the first part and thus ensures the connection. The course participants should first speculate about the image from the film: It shows a central scene of the second part of the film. It is important that the students remember the last scene (in front of the car) from the first part of the film; if necessary, this scene should be shown again.

During the viewing

Tasks 2 and 3 should be completed during the viewing. The aim of task 2 is to make it a little easier to understand and to structure the scene.

Task 3 is more open-ended. It draws the attention of the KT to the activity of a Ripper. Therefore, if necessary, it should be discussed once again what a Ripper is and what he does.

The video can be accessed via the film's homepage. It can be shown online during the lesson. Alternatively, course participants can access the video on their smartphones and work on the worksheet, e.g. in pairs or groups.

Teach online

The worksheet is also suitable for online lessons. Share the worksheet with all participants and then send your participants in pairs or small groups to a separate room (e.g. at Zoom: breakout room), where you can watch the video together and work on the worksheet.

Many thanks to Steffen Weinert for granting us the right to print the screenshot from the film.
